As the days grow shorter in Finland, the farmers of Trans Farm Oy, the parent company of FoodFarm, have successfully harvested this year’s hemp seed crop, which has exceeded many expectations. According to crop estimates, FoodFarm will receive nearly double the amount of hemp for further processing this year compared to last year!

The impressive yield was not entirely unexpected. The number of hemp farmers has surged to a record high, with the area dedicated to hemp cultivation nearly one and a half times larger than it was last year. Additionally, the adoption of suitable farming practices has significantly contributed to this success.

“This year’s impressive yield is influenced not only by the cultivated area but also by the expertise involved in growing hemp. Our farmers seem to have demonstrated very good mastery of cultivation techniques this year,” praises Jyrki Leppälä, CEO of Trans Farm Oy.

The increase in cultivated area alone does not account for the remarkable results; the yield per hectare has also improved. While the weather conditions during the growing season were favorable, Leppälä emphasizes the farmers’ expertise as the most crucial factor.

“The type of soil in which hemp is cultivated is crucial. According to our surveys, field selections were made very well this year, and the farmers’ expertise in this area is continually improving.”

FoodFarm’s parent company maintains regular communication with hemp farmers through in-person meetings, phone calls, and online channels. This consistent exchange of information about cultivating this relatively new crop on an industrial scale in Finland promotes responsible and profitable farming practices.

From the consumer’s perspective, hemp is regarded as a sustainable option primarily because of its positive environmental impact. Hemp seeds are climate-friendly for two main reasons: their carbon footprint is minimal in relation to their protein content, and as the plants grow, they effectively absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

For farmers, the primary attraction of hemp is its favorable price. It offers better compensation than many other specialty crops, and as the yield per hectare improves, the profitability of cultivation increases.
